Fun Perennials

Plants aren't growing in my yard just because they are pretty. These Fun Perennials and annuals also have entertainment value.

Exploding seed pods make this a very fun plant to grow.
This Balsam is an annual plant with pretty flowers.

My husband collected a bunch of seed pods one year and placed them in an envelope on his dresser and forgot all about them. We were laying in bed one night and kept hearing this funny noise. It took us awhile to figure out the seeds were popping inside the envelope.

Leaves Are Fun

Pig Squeak Bergenia

Dampen your fingers and place your thumb on the bottom of a leaf and your forefinger on the top of the leaf. Rub the two together and you will hear a pig squeak.

This plant has a beautiful flower and grows well in shady gardens.

Big Ears Lambs Ears

Truthfully I've never been close enough to a real lamb to feel its ears!
This plant has soft fuzzy grey leaves and is fun to touch.
It is perennial and best planted in containers.

Flowers Are Unique

These fun perennials have unique characteristics and history behind them.

Physostegia virginiana commonly called Obedient Plant and Dragons Head.
This flower is used in floral arrangements.

The flowers on the stalks are hinged. You can move them to the left and right and they will stay where you put them. This allows you to arrange the individual flowers when using the stalks for floral arrangements. The flowers do not move up and down!

The Passion Flower is thought to represent the crucifixion of Christ.
The three red stigmatas represent the 3 nails.
The five green anthers just below the stigmatas represent 5 wounds.
The purple filaments represent the crown of thorn. There are 72 filaments.
The ten petals represent the 10 faithful apostles.
Coloring of Passion flowers vary, the colors mentioned above match the parts to this particular flower for ease of seeing the representation.

Miscellaneous Fun

Foxglove flowers are fun to look at.
The flowers have the most intriguing designs painted in them.
Foxgloves have a common name of Fairy Gloves.
If you go out into the garden early in the morning you can sneak up on bees sleeping in the flowers and pet them. (Don't try this is you have a bee allergy!)

Take the time to really look at your garden plants and you will see there are many more fun perennials than what are listed here.
