Gardening Terms IGardening Terms starting with the letter I.
I've gathered a list of some of the common terms you will hear or read about when dealing with nurseries and garden plants. This list is by no means a complete collection of horticultural techniques and terms.
I Garden Termsimperfect flower: A flower containing either the male (stamen) or femail (pistal) organs but not both.impermeable: A barrier that allows nothing to pass through. incomplete flower: A flower that is missing one or more of the four basic appendages (sepals, petals, stamens, carpels). indicator plant: A plant used to predict the abscence or presence of nutrients, water or disease. In my gardens, coleus and black eyed susans let me know when it is time to water. inflorescence: A discreet group of flowers. insecticide: A chemical used to kill insects and helps to prevent their attacks. internode: Portion of a stem where there is no leaves, the portion between leaves. invasive plant: A plant that, when grown in the right conditions, readily spreads and reproduces to the point where it can become a nuisance. island bed: A garden that is surrounded on all sides by lawn, groundcover or stone. It does not have a backing of green plants, fencing or buildings.
