A listing of common terms you may hear or read about when learning gardening. This list is by no means a complete gardening dictionary.
V Garden Terminologyvariegated foliage: Leaves that are not solid in color. Most variegated plants have green and white leaves although some will have yellow and green.variegation: A pattern of spots, stripes or patches in leaves or other organs, caused by plastid mutations. variety: A subgroup of plants in a species with similiar characteristics. venation: The arrangement of the veins in leaves and petals. Trees that are simliar in other characteristics can identified by the patterns of the veins in their leaves. vermiculite: A lightweight mica product used as a rooting medium or as a soil amendment for indoor plants. vernalization: The cold treatment necessary for biennials to initiate flowering. viable seed: A seed that is capable of germinating under the right conditions. vine: A herbaceous or woody perennial whose stems need to be supported in order to grow erect. viticulture: The growing and cultivating grapes. volunteer: A plant that grew by self seeding rather than being planted by you.
